Making red velvet pancakes from scratch is so easy and such afestive breakfast for holidays! Surprise the family with this delicious, fun breakfast.
I developed this recipe last Valentine’s Day and my kidsloved it so much! I was even extra festive and made the pancakes into hearts. But if you’re not up for that level of holiday cheer the traditional circle works just as well. Ha!
Most red velvet pancakes use a red velvet cake mix and while I’m sure those are delicious, these are just as easy to whip up yourself and you don’t even have to remember to buy any special ingredients when you’re at the store. Because we all know that struggle is real.

How to make Red Velvet Pancakes
- Whisk together dry ingredients.
- Create a well in the dry ingredients and whisk in the wet ingredients until just combined. The batter may be lumpy and that is ok.
- Heat a griddle on medium low.
- Brush griddle with butter or lightly spray with cooking spray.
- Pour about 1/3 cup portions onto the griddle, or make the pancakes any size you choose.
- When the edges are set and the bubbles in the center don’t fill quickly, flip the pancake. Cook for 1-2 minutes on the next side until cooked through.
How to make the pancakes red
To make the pancakes red, use red food coloring.
When you mix up the batter, it will look more pink than red. Don’t stress, the color will darken as the pancakes cook. In order to get an even color throughout the pancakes and on the outsides, cook them low and slow!
If you try to crank up the heat you’ll get brown on the outside, which is beautiful and delicious on traditional pancakes but the idea here is to maintain that nice red color on the tops.
Adding the cocoa powder also contributes to the classic red velvet color.
Farmstead Kitchen Tip: Mix up pancake batter in a large, 4-cup glass measuring cup.
This way you can easily pour it onto your griddle! Minimal messes and minimal dishes – just the way I like it. I have both of the griddles listed in the recommended products section and love them both! They are each super affordable and make it easy to cook a bunch of pancakes at once.
